IRB Frequently Asked Questions

How do I download the WebXCVR control software?

The latest version of the WebXCVR software can be downloaded from the www.w4mq.com web page. Please check periodically for new releases.

What are the IP addresses of the Remote Bases
W4MQ is at   w4mq.no-ip.com

VK3UR is at www.daves-portal.com

How do know the link is working properly?
Since internet connections are not always reliable or software crashes occur, several features have been included in the Web Transceiver to allow the user insight into the link and radio operations.

The small colored square in the upper left of the Web Transceiver provides a simple indication of link connectivity between you and the remote software. If it is green then all is working fine, yellow indicates that there are occasional link outages, and red indicates that either the link or the remote software is not operational. Additional  monitoring of the remotes status can be viewed via the web page at  www.w4mq.com

What callsign should I sign on the Remote Base

A.  First the regulations of the Federal Communications Commission. Extracts from the applicable US law is as follows:   PART 97--AMATEUR RADIO SERVICE--Station Operation Standards Sec. 97.119 Station identification.

All Stations:  (a) Each amateur station, ..., must transmit its assigned call sign on its transmitting channel at the end of each communication, and at least every 10 minutes during a communication, for the purpose of clearly making the source of the transmissions from the station known to those receiving the transmissions. No station may transmit unidentified communications or signals, or transmit as the station call sign, any call sign not authorized to the station. .........

Non-US Licensed Stations: (g) When the station is transmitting under the authority of Sec. 97.107 of this part (non-US  licensed amateurs operating in the US) , an indicator consisting of the appropriate letter-numeral designating the station location must be included before the call sign that was issued to the station by the country granting the license. For an amateur service license granted by the Government of Canada, however, the indicator must be included after the call sign. At least once during each intercommunication, the identification announcement must include the geographical location as nearly as possible by city and state, commonwealth or possession.

B. In addition to the above, W4MQ  requirements are as follows:
Each station operating the remotebases should periodically identify  that they are operating through "W4MQ Remotebase in Reston, VA".

Examples:
K6WR   ===>  K6WR operating through the W4MQ remote in Reston, VA
or........K6WR/4 operating through the W4MQ remote in Reston, VA

VK3AJJ ===> W4/VK3AJJ operating through the W4MQ remote in Reston, VA

VE7CCL===>VE7CCL/W4 operating through  the W4MQ remote in Reston, VA

BOTTOM LINE: The call you should sign would be the same call you would use if your were actually sitting at the Remotebase location .....plus..... identifying that you are using the Remotebase and its location.

How do I get sound?

IRBSound. This also provides a loopback capability to allow the user to check the audio received at the Remote Base.

Skype:  Get this from www.skype.com  Excellent voice-over-IP software.

What is IRB Sound?
IRB Sound is software developed for the IRB to extend the speaker/mic to your computer

The objective of this software was to provide an application that would provide minimal voice delay, excellent voice quality, and be less in sensitive to operation behind home router.

IRB sound is accessible from the Sound menu of the Webxcvr application.

How can I adjust the size of the WebXCVR radio control?

The radio control is a fixed size, but to allow for differences in display and/or computer characteristics, the size may be adjusted to allow full visibility for the bottom data fields and the heading and menu bar. Just drag the lower right corner down and left to get the best setting. This will be automatically saved and will be used whenever you start the application.

How do I change frequency or control the radio?

Details instructions can be found in the help file. A summary of the Keyboard Commands can be found here.

The frequency can be entered immediately by using the number keys on the 'regular keyboard' and not the auxiliary keypad. Frequencies can be entered in kHz or MHz and only the useful digits need be entered, e.g. 7 will get you to 7.000 MHz, etc, Typing a return. will accept the entry. The Esc key can be used to clear the entry. Backspace works normally to clear the previous  digit.

The frequency can be tuned by two methods. (!) clicking the mouse inside of the tuning knob, and (2) using the arrow keys. Using the mouse the left and right mouse control will tune down and up in 100Hz steps. Using the keyboard arrows, the left and right arrows will change the step size being tuned and the up and down arrow will increase and decrease the frequency.

The above tuning will affect the both the Rx and Tx frequencies (assuming you are not in Split;it mode. Using the RIT will only affect the Rx freq. Enter RIT by selecting the RIT on/off label and the select appropriate option. The label should now be red. Tuning is done using the < and > key (no Shift) to decrease or increase the frequency.
